Featured #factCheck Blogs

Executive Summary
Amid the ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, a video of a cargo ship engulfed in flames is being widely shared across social media platforms. The clip shows a vessel burning intensely at sea, with users claiming that Iran targeted the ship with a drone for attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz without permission. Some users have also claimed that the destroyed vessel was a Pakistani-flagged oil tanker hit by Iranian missiles. However, research by CyberPeace found the claim to be false. Our verification also reveals that the viral video is being misrepresented.
Claim
Social media users, including an X (formerly Twitter) account named “IranDefenceForce,” shared the video claiming that Iran targeted an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz for allegedly violating restrictions.

Fact Check
A keyword-based news search led us to multiple credible reports mentioning a statement by Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. According to reports, Iran had allowed ships from “friendly countries” including India, China, Russia, Iraq, and Pakistan to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

A March 26, 2026 report by The Hindu stated that Araghchi also emphasized Iran’s assertion of sovereignty over the strategic waterway connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The same statement was also shared via the official X handle of the Iranian Consulate in Mumbai. During a frame-by-frame analysis of the viral video, we noticed the word “SAFEEN” written on a part of the ship. Using this clue, we conducted a targeted news search and found a report by Reuters dated March 4, 2026.

According to the report, a Malta-flagged container ship named Safeen Prestige was damaged in an attack while heading toward the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping sources cited in the report stated that the vessel was struck around 1109 GMT while sailing eastward, approximately two nautical miles north of Oman. The ship had reportedly departed from Sharjah Port in the United Arab Emirates but was damaged before reaching its destination. Its last known location was in the Persian Gulf. Additionally, earlier this month, another cargo vessel named Mayuri Naree was also attacked near Iran’s Qeshm Island. As per Reuters, an explosion caused a fire in the engine room, after which 20 crew members were rescued by the Omani navy, while three remained missing.
Conclusion
The viral video does not show Iran targeting a Pakistani oil tanker for violating restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. In reality, the clip features the Malta-flagged container ship Safeen Prestige, which was damaged in an unidentified attack in the Persian Gulf. The claim being circulated on social media is misleading.

Our research also confirms that the video is not real but AI-generated.

Fact Check
To verify the claim, we first conducted a keyword search on Google but found no credible media reports supporting this claim.

Next, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a reverse image search using Google Lens. During this process, we found the same video uploaded on an Instagram channel on March 28, 2026. The uploader clearly mentioned that the video was created purely for entertainment purposes.

We further analyzed the video using AI detection tools. When scanned with Hive Moderation, the results indicated that the video is approximately 94% AI-generated.

In the next step, we also tested the clip using DeepAI. According to its analysis, the video is about 97% AI-generated.

Conclusion
Our research clearly shows that the viral video is not authentic. It is an AI-generated clip created for entertainment purposes, and the claim that Uttar Pradesh Police has started e-rickshaw patrolling due to petrol shortage is false.

Executive Summary:
In the end of January 2024, India sees an inauguration of Ram Mandir that is a historical event to which people came culturally and spiritually. All communities in the world acknowledge this point of life as a victory and also understand how it unites people. In the midst of this genuine joy over success, there has been a disconcerting increase in malpractices designed to exploit people’s enthusiasm. This report aims at providing awareness and guidelines on how one can avoid the fraud activities that could be circulating as a celebration of Ram Mandir inauguration. An example cited here is on scams that give fake free recharge to users making them connect with the Prime Minister of India and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
False Claim:
According to the message passed in WhatsApp, as a commemoration of the inauguration of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya in January 2024, free Rs.749 mobile recharge for three months would be offered to all Indians across India by both the PM and UP CM. The message prompts the recipients to click on the blue link provided and then recharge their numbers.
The Deceptive Scheme:
We have been informed of a circulating link (https://mahacashhback[.]in/#1705296887543) stating that it offers ₹719 recharge in honor of the Ram Mandir inauguration. It is worth mentioning that this link does not belong to any legitimate movement concerning the inauguration; public excitement and trust were used for personal gain.
Analyzing the Fraudulent Campaign:
- Exploiting Emotional Significance:Scammers are using the cultural and religious significance of Ram mandir inauguration as a cover to fool people into participating in its fraudulent scheme.
- Fake Recharge Offers:The broadcasted link is offering a recharge pretending that they celebrate it’s inauguration. Such offers should be handled with care and established through authorized avenues.
- Bogus Landing Pages and Comments:The landing page linked to the link typically shows images of Ram Mandir and fake comments succeeding in a make-believe appearance. Legitimate projects linked to major events rely on official and trustworthy communication mechanisms.
- Data Collection Attempts:However, users may be asked for personal details like mobile numbers under the false pretext of winning a fake recharge. Legitimate organizations practice secure protocols for data collection and communication.
- Sharing for Activation:After the data entry, users are prompted to share a link in other people’s posts; it is said that this will help “activate” recharge. This is a popular trick among swindlers to keep the fraud going on due to sending misleading messages.
What do we Analyze?
- It is important to note that at this particular point, there has not been any official declaration or a proper confirmation of such offers on any official channel.
- The campaign is hosted on a third party domain instead of any official Government Website, this raised suspicion. Also the domain has been registered in very recent times.

Executive Summary:
The internet is a nest of scams and there's much need to be careful with predatory ideas that prey on the naïve people. Within the recent days, a malicious campaign has emerged falsely alleging 28 day free recharge by courtesy of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This blog seeks to analyze the tactics used by this scam in luring the victims and give an overview on how one can identify and keep away from such fraudulent activities.
Claim:
In view of the increasing support for the BJP 2024 election, a rumor has allegedly claimed that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi offering a free recharge with a validity period of up-to twenty eight days at cost of ₹239 to all Indian users. The message encourages the users to click on a given link in order to redeem the free recharge, pointing out that this offer is valid until January 26th of 2024.
The Deceptive Journey:
- Insecure Links:The research begins with a suspicious link (http://offerintro[.]com/BJP2024), without any credibility that honest sites use to protect the user information. We should keep in mind that the links which aren’t secure may easily lead to phishing and other cyber threats.
- Multiple Redirects:When users click the link, they are immediately directed through a series of links. This common tactic used by scammers is designed to hide the true origin of their fraudulent scheme, making it difficult for users' efforts to identify the malicious activity.
- False Promises and Fake Comments:The landing page has a banner of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi that makes it look like this is an official channel and hence authentic. Further, false comments can be also included to compliment the alleged initiative. But remember that genuine government announcements are made through legal channels, not by the shady websites.
- Mobile Number Request:As the next step, the users enter their mobile numbers in the specified field. True initiatives never really need the personal information to pass through unofficial lines. This is actually a trick that scammers use to acquire the important information.
- Share to Activate:Once a user has entered the mobile number, he/she is prompted to share the link with others in order to “activate” promised free recharge. This method is most often used by scammers for spreading their fraudulent message beyond the targeted victim.
- Fake Progress Display:When the users have done their part by sharing the link, a false recharge in progress bar is shown to make them believe that it has started. But the consumers are unwittingly playing a part in the fraud.
- Recharge Completion Pop-up:The last stage of fraud includes a pop-up saying that the recharge is done; leaving users with the false belief that they have benefited from a legitimate government initiative.
