Embarking on this technological odyssey, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, in a conclave with the nation’s virtual business activists, delineated the ‘big steps’ being undertaken in the realm of AI. The gathering, as reported by the pro-government Tasnim News, was not a simple exchange of polite remarks but a profound discourse that offered an incisive overview of the burgeoning digital economy and the strides Iran is making in the AI landscape. The conversation deeply revolved around the current ecosystem of technology and innovation within Iran, delving into the burgeoning startup culture and the commendable drive within its youth populace to propel the nation to the forefront of technology.

Brigadier General Alireza Sabahifard, Commander of the Iranian Army Air Defense Force, has underscored the pivotal role of AI in modern warfare. He identifies the ongoing adoption of AI technologies as a strategic imperative, a top priority fundamentally designed to elevate the air defense capabilities in Iran to meet 21st-century threats.

Economic Implications

Yet, the Iranian pursuit of AI is not solely confined to bolstering military prowess. It is also pervasive in nurturing economic opportunity. President Raisi’s rhetoric touches upon economic rejuvenation, job creation, and the proliferation of financial and legal support mechanisms, all blurred into a cohesive vision that would foster a suitable environment for the private sector in the AI domain. The ambition is grand and strikingly clear — a nation committed to training several thousand individuals in the digital economy sector, signaling a deep-rooted commitment to cultivating a healthy environment  for AI-driven innovation.

The Iranian leader’s vision extends beyond the simple creation of infrastructure. It extends to the fostering of a healthy, competitive, and peaceful social milieu where domestic and international markets are within easy reach, promoting the prosperity of the digital economy and its activists. Such a vision of technological symbiosis, in many Western democracies, would be labelled as audaciously progressive. In Iran, however, withdrawing a major chunk of economic investments from the country's security state adds layers of complexity and nuance to this transformative narrative.

Still, Iran’s ambitious AI journey unfolds with a recognition of its cultural underpinnings and societal structure. The Nexus between the private sector, with its cyber-technocratic visionaries, and the regime, with its omnipresent ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, is a tightrope that requires unparalleled poise and vigilance.

Moreover, in the holy city of Qom, a hub of intellectual fervour and the domicile of half of Iran's 200,000 Shia clerics, there burgeons a captivating interest in the possible synergies between AI and theological study. The clerical establishment, hidden within a stronghold of religious scholarship, perceives AI not as a problem but as a potential solution, a harbinger of progress that could ally with tradition. It sees in AI the potential of parsing Islamic texts with newfound precision, thereby allowing religious rulings, or fatwas, to resonate with the everchanging   Iranian society. This integration of technology is a testament to the dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity.

Yet the integration of AI into the venerable traditions of societies such as Iran's is threaded with challenges. Herein lays the paradox, for as AI is poised to potentially bolster religious study, the threat of cultural dissolution remains present. AI, if not judiciously designed with local values and ethics in mind, could inadvertently propagate an ideology at odds with local customs, beliefs, and the cornerstone principles of a society.

As Mehr News Agency reports, the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) is on the cusp of pioneering a joint venture with international tech juggernauts, chiefly Chinese companies, to inject the lifeblood of AI into the heart of its oil and gas production processes. This grand undertaking is nothing short of a digital renaissance aimed at achieving 'great reforms’ and driving a drastic 20% improvement in efficiency. AI’s algorithmic potency, unleashed in the hydrocarbon fields, promises to streamline expenses, enhance efficacy, and maximise production outputs, thereby bolstering Iran's economic bulwark.

A video has been going viral on social media in recent days in which Republic TV’s Editor-in-Chief and anchor Arnab Goswami can allegedly be heard using objectionable language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While sharing the video, users are claiming that Arnab Goswami publicly made controversial remarks about the Prime Minister.

An investigation by CyberPeace Foundation found this claim to be completely false. Our probe revealed that the viral video is edited and is being circulated on social media with a misleading narrative. In the original video, Arnab Goswami was not making any personal statement; rather, he was referring to an old statement made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Viral Claim

An Instagram user posted this video on 5 January 2026. In the video, a voice resembling Arnab Goswami is heard saying, “Ye jo Narendra Modi hain, ye chhe mahine baad ghar se nahi nikal paayenge aur Hindustan ke log inhein danda maarenge.”

(Translation: “This Narendra Modi will not be able to step out of his house after six months, and the people of India will beat him with sticks.”)

Fact Check

‍

To verify the viral claim, we first examined the video using Google Lens search. During this process, we found a video published on 18 July 2024 on the official YouTube channel of Republic Bharat. The investigation revealed that this video is the longer (extended) version of the viral clip.

After carefully watching the full video, it became clear that Arnab Goswami was not making the statement himself. Instead, he was referring to a remark made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This confirms that the viral video was clipped and presented out of context.

In the next step of the investigation, to verify whether Rahul Gandhi had indeed made such a statement, we conducted a customized keyword search on Google. During this, we found a video published on 6 February 2020 on the official YouTube channel of India Today.

In this video, recorded during a public event ahead of the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi is seen sharply attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that if the Prime Minister fails to resolve the issue of unemployment in the country, the youth would beat him with sticks.

Conclusion

‍

The CyberPeace Foundation’s investigation found this claim to be completely fake. The viral video is edited and is being shared in a misleading context. In the original video, Arnab Goswami was referring to an old statement made by Rahul Gandhi, which was selectively clipped and presented in a way that falsely suggests Arnab Goswami himself made objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Overview:

WazirX is the platform for cryptocurrencies, based in India that has been hacked, and it made a loss of more than $230 million in cryptocurrency. This case concerned an unauthorized transaction with a multisignature or multisig, wallet controlled through Liminal’a digital asset management platform. These attacking incidents have thereafter raised more questions on the security of the Cryptocurrency exchanges and efficiency of the existing policies and laws.

Wallet Configuration and Security Measures

This wallet was breached and had a multisig setting meaning that more than one signature was needed to authorize a transaction. Specifically, it had six signatories: five are funded by WazirX and one is funded by Liminal. Every transaction needed the approval of at least three signatories of WazirX, all of whom had addressed security concerns by using Ledger’s hardware wallets; while the Liminal, too, had a signatory, for approval.

To further increase the level of security of the transactions, a whitelisting policy was introduced, only limited addresses were authorized to receive funds. This system was rather vulnerable, and the attackers managed to grasp the discrepancy between the information available through Liminal’s interface and the content of the transaction to seize unauthorized control over the wallet and implement the theft.

Modus Operandi: Attack Mechanics

The cyber attack appears to have been carefully carried out, with preliminary investigations suggesting the following tactics: 

• Payload Manipulation: The attackers apparently substituted the transaction’s payload during signing; hence, they can reroute the collected funds into an unrelated wallet. 

• Chain Hopping: To make it much harder to track their movements, the attackers split large amounts of money across multiple blockchains and broke tens of thousands of dollars into thousands of transactions involving different cryptocurrencies. This technique makes it difficult to trace people and things. 

• Zero Balance Transactions: There were also some instances where it ended up with no Ethereum (ETH) in the balance and such wallets also in use for the purpose of further anonymization of the transactions.

• Analysis of the blockchain data suggested the enemy might have been making the preparations for this attack for several days prior to their attack and involved a high amount of planning. 

Actions taken by WazirX:

Following the attack, WazirX implemented a series of immediate actions:

• User Notifications: The users were immediately notified of the occurrence of the breach and the possible risk it posed to them. 

• Law Enforcement Engagement: The matters were reported to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and specific authorities of which the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). 

• Service Suspension: WazirX had suspended all its trading operations and user deposits’ and withdrawals’ to minimize further cases and investigate. 

• Global Outreach: The exchange contacted more than 500 cryptocurrency exchanges and requested to blacklist the wallet’s addresses linked to the theft. 

• Bounty Program: A bounty program was announced to encourage people to share information that can enable the authorities to retrieve the stolen money. A maximum of 23 million dollars was placed on the bounty. 

Further  Investigations 

WazirX stated that it has contracted the services of cybersecurity professionals to help in the prosecution process of identifying and compensating for the losses. The exchange is still investigating the forensic data and working with the police for tracking the stolen assets. Nevertheless, the prospects of full recovery may be quite questionable primarily because of complexity of the attack and the methods used by the attackers. 

Precautionary measures: 

 The WazirX cyber attack clearly implies that there is the necessity to improve the security and the regulation of the cryptocurrency industry. As exchanges become increasingly targeted by hackers, there is a pressing need for: 

• Stricter Security Protocols: The commitment to technical innovations, such as integration of MFA, as well as constant monitoring of the users’ wallets’ activities. 

• Regulatory Oversight: Formalization of the laws that require proper security for the cryptocurrency exchange platforms to safeguard their users as well as their investments. 

• Community Awareness: To bypass such predicaments, there is a need to study on emergent techniques in spreading awareness, particularly in cases of scams or phishing attempts that are likely to follow such breaches. 

Conclusion:

The cyber attack on WazirX in the field of cryptocurrency market, shows weaknesses and provides valuable lessons for enhancing the security.  This attack highlights critical vulnerabilities in cryptocurrency exchanges, even though employing advanced security measures like multisignature wallets and whitelisting policies. The attack's complexity, involving payload manipulation, chain hopping, and zero balance transactions, underscores the attackers' meticulous planning and the challenges in tracing stolen assets. This case brings a strong message regarding the necessity of solid security measures, and constant attention to security in the rapidly growing world of digital assets. Furthermore, the incident highlights the importance of community awareness and education on emerging threats like scams and phishing attempts, which usually follow such breaches. By fostering a culture of vigilance and knowledge, the cryptocurrency community can better defend against future attacks.
