#FactCheck -AI-Altered Clip Falsely Attributes Taliban Comments to General Upendra Dwivedi
Executive Summary
A video clip of Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi is being widely shared across social media platforms with the claim that he criticised the Indian government's policy towards Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. In the viral clip, the Army Chief is allegedly heard saying that India is doing nothing except sending money to the Taliban government due to the Centre’s failed policies.
However, CyberPeace Research Wing research found the claim to be false. The viral video is a deepfake. In the original footage, General Upendra Dwivedi was speaking about Operation Sindoor and the preparedness of the Indian Armed Forces for a possible “Operation Sindoor 2.0.” He made no remarks regarding the Taliban or the government’s Afghanistan policy.
Claim
An X user named “XaQil” shared the viral video on May 31, 2026, with the caption:“Due to failed policies of the Central Government, India is doing nothing except sending Money to Taliban government. How can money alone do everything?” — Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.
Fact Check
In the viral video, General Dwivedi is purportedly heard making remarks about India’s Afghanistan policy, the Taliban, Pakistan, Iran, and India’s diplomatic position. To verify the claim, we searched for the original source of the video. A reverse image search of key frames led us to the authentic footage posted by news agency ANI on its official X account on May 30, 2026.
In the original video, General Dwivedi was responding to a question about Operation Sindoor. He stated that the operation was still ongoing, hostilities had only paused temporarily, and that the Indian Armed Forces were fully prepared if “Operation Sindoor 2.0” became necessary.
He also spoke about enhancing coordination among the three services and maintaining operational readiness.”
No part of his statement mentioned the Taliban, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, or criticism of the Central Government.
Further corroboration came from media reports covering the same event. According to a report published by Navbharat Times on May 30, 2026, General Dwivedi made the remarks during the passing-out parade of the 150th course of the National Defence Academy (NDA), where he attended as the chief guest. He reiterated that the armed forces were fully prepared for “Operation Sindoor 2.0” if required.
Since the content of the viral clip did not match the original statement, we examined it using InVID’s MeVer Deepfake Detector. The tool flagged signs of AI manipulation and indicated that the video had likely been altered.
Conclusion
Cyber Peace Foundation found that the viral video purportedly showing Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi criticising the Indian government’s policy towards the Taliban is a deepfake. The Army Chief made no such remarks. The original video was recorded during an NDA event, where he spoke about Operation Sindoor and the preparedness of the Indian Armed Forces for a possible future operation. The viral clip has been manipulated using AI to spread a false narrative.

The validation of information leaves no doubt, that the video was shot in January 2024, which showed Raisi’s visiting Nemroud Reservoir Dam project. As a means of verifying the origin of the video, the CyberPeace Research Team conducted reverse image search and analyzed the information obtained from the Islamic Republic News Agency, Mehran News, and the Iranian Students’ News Agency. Further, the associated press pointed out inconsistencies between the part in the video that went viral and the segment that was shown by Iranian state television. The original video is old and it is not related to the tragic crash as there is incongruence between the snowy background and the green landscape with a river presented in the clip.

A video circulating on social media claims to show Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi inside a helicopter an hour before his fatal crash.
Fact Check:
Upon receiving the posts, in some of the social media posts we found some similar watermarks of the IRNA News agency and Nouk-e-Qalam News.
Taking a cue from this, we performed a keyword search to find any credible source of the shared video, but we found no such video uploaded by the IRNA News agency on their website. Recently, they haven’t uploaded any video regarding the viral news.
We closely analyzed the video, it can be seen that President Ebrahim Raisi was watching outside the snow-covered mountain, but in the internet-available footage regarding the accident, there were no such snow-covered mountains that could be seen but green forest.
We then checked for any social media posts uploaded by IRNA News Agency and found that they had uploaded the same video on X on January 18, 2024. The post clearly indicates the President’s aerial visit to Nemroud Dam.
The viral video is old and does not contain scenes that appear before the tragic chopper crash involving President Raisi.
Conclusion:
The viral clip is not related to the fatal crash of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's helicopter and is actually from a January 2024 visit to the Nemroud Reservoir Dam project. The claim that the video shows visuals before the crash is false and misleading.

Amid reports of widespread protests in Iran over the past two weeks, a video showing protesters setting cars on fire is being widely shared on social media with claims that it depicts recent unrest in the country.
However, research by Cyber Peace Foundation has found the viral claim to be false. Our resarch shows that the video is not from Iran, but from violent protests that took place near the Turkish Consulate in Thessaloniki, Greece, on November 1, 2025.
Claim:
On January 11, 2026, users on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) shared the viral video claiming it showed massive anti-regime protests in Iran. One such post alleged:
“1.5–1.85 million Iranians are fighting on the streets tonight. 180 cities are burning… The revolution has spread. Iranians have decided to continue this fight for freedom until Iran becomes free from Islamic rule.”

Fact Check:
To verify the claim, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and conducted a Google Reverse Image Search. During this process, we found the same video uploaded on Instagram on November 2, 2025, well before the recent protests in Iran. (Link): https://www.instagram.com/reel/DQjRtCOjOPM/
Further analysis revealed that the video was uploaded from a Greek Instagram account, indicating that the visuals are unrelated to Iran.
It is important to note that while protests in Iran have been ongoing for the past two weeks, the viral video has been circulating on the internet since early November 2025, establishing a clear timeline mismatch.
A keyword search led us to a report published on November 2, 2025, by Ekathimerini, a leading Greek media outlet. The report detailed violent clashes that erupted in Thessaloniki following a concert by Greek rapper Lex.
According to the report:
Police in Thessaloniki detained 18 people and arrested one individual on drug-related charges. The unrest began when a group attacked police forces stationed outside the Turkish Consulate. During the clashes, six cars were damaged, two of them completely burned, along with a garbage bin. ( report link and screenshot)
In the next stage of the investigation, we found similar visuals to the viral video on a YouTube channel named “Taifer”, where the footage was published on November 2, 2025. The link to the post and its screenshot can be seen below.

To strengthen our findings, we conducted a geolocation analysis of the video. By comparing road layouts, surrounding buildings, light poles, and other visual markers with online maps and images, we confirmed that the location shown in the video matches Agios Dimitriou Street in Thessaloniki, Greece.
