Romance scams have been rised in India. A staggering 66 percent of individuals in India have been ensnared by the siren songs of deceitful online dating schemes. These are not the attempts of yesteryears but rather a new breed of scams, seamlessly weaving the threads of traditional deceit with the sinew of cutting-edge technologies such as generative AI and deep fakes. A report by Tenable highlights the rise of romance scams in India, which now combine traditional tactics with advanced technologies like generative AI and deepfakes. Over 69% of Indians struggle to distinguish between artificial and authentic human voices. Scammers are using celebrity impersonations and platforms like Facebook to lure victims into a false sense of security.

The Romance Scam

A report by Tenable, the exposure management company, illuminates the disturbing evolution of these romance scams. It reveals a reality: AI-generated deep lakes have attained a level of sophistication where an astonishing 69 percent of Indians confess to struggling to discern between artificial and authentic human voices. This technological prowess has armed scammers with the tools to craft increasingly convincing personas, enabling them to perpetrate their nefarious acts with alarming success.

In 2023 alone, 43 percent of Indians reported falling victim to AI voice scams, with a staggering 83 percent of those targeted suffering financial loss. The scammers, like puppeteers, manipulate their digital marionettes with a deftness that is both awe-inspiring and horrifying. They have mastered the art of impersonating celebrities and fabricating personas that resonate with their targets, particularly preying on older demographics who may be more susceptible to their charms.

Social media platforms, which were once heralded as the town squares of the 21st century, have unwittingly become fertile grounds for these fraudulent activities. They lure victims into a false sense of security before the scammers orchestrate their deceitful symphonies. Chris Boyd, a staff research engineer at Tenable, issues a stern warning against the lure of private conversations, where the protective layers of security are peeled away, leaving individuals exposed to the machinations of these digital charlatans.

The Vulnerability of Individuals 

The report highlights the vulnerability of certain individuals, especially those who are older, widowed, or experiencing memory loss. These individuals are systematically targeted by heartless criminals who exploit their longing for connection and companionship. The importance of scrutinising requests for money from newfound connections is underscored, as is the need for meticulous examination of photographs and videos for any signs of manipulation or deceit.

'Increasing awareness and maintaining vigilance are our strongest weapons against these heartless manipulations, 'safeguarding love seekers from the treacherous web of AI-enhanced deception.'

The landscape of love has been irrevocably altered by the prevalence of smartphones and the deep proliferation of mobile internet. Finding love has morphed into a digital odyssey, with more and more Indians turning to dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge. Yet, as with all technological advancements, there lurks a shadowy underbelly. The rapid adoption of dating sites has provided potential scammers with a veritable goldmine of opportunity.

It is not uncommon these days to hear tales of individuals who have lost their life savings to a person they met on a dating site or who have been honey-trapped and extorted by scammers on such platforms. A new study, titled 'Modern Love' and published by McAfee ahead of Valentine's Day 2024, reveals that such scams are rampant in India, with 39 percent of users reporting that their conversations with a potential love interest online turned out to be with a scammer.

The study also found that 77 percent of Indians have encountered fake profiles and photos that appear AI-generated on dating websites or apps or on social media, while 26 percent later discovered that they were engaging with AI-generated bots rather than real people. 'The possibilities of AI are endless, and unfortunately, so are the perils,' says Steve Grobman, McAfee’s Chief Technology Officer.

Steps to Safeguard 

Scammers have not limited their hunting grounds to dating sites alone. A staggering 91 percent of Indians surveyed for the study reported that they, or someone they know, have been contacted by a stranger through social media or text message and began to 'chat' with them regularly. Cybercriminals exploit the vulnerability of those seeking love, engaging in long and sophisticated attempts to defraud their victims.

McAfee offers some steps to protect oneself from online romance and AI scams:

• Scrutinise any direct messages you receive from a love interest via a dating app or social media.
• Be on the lookout for consistent, AI-generated messages which often lack substance or feel generic.
• Avoid clicking on any links in messages from someone you have not met in person.
• Perform a reverse image search of any profile pictures used by the person.
• Refrain from sending money or gifts to someone you haven’t met in person, even if they send you money first.
• Discuss your new love interest with your trusted friend. It can be easy to overlook red flags when you are hopeful and excited.

Executive Summary:

The photograph of a bridge allegedly in Mumbai, India circulated through social media was found to be false. Through investigations such as reverse image searches, examination of similar videos, and comparison with reputable news sources and google images,  it has been found that the bridge in the viral photo is  the Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge located in Qingdao, China. Multiple pieces of evidence, including matching architectural features and corroborating videos tell us that the bridge is not from Mumbai. No credible reports or sources have been found to prove the existence of a similar bridge in Mumbai. 

Claims:

Social media users claim a viral image of the bridge is from Mumbai.

Fact Check:

Once the image was received, it was investigated under the reverse image search to find any lead or any information related to it. We found an image published by Mirror News media outlet, though we are still unsure but we can see the same upper pillars and the foundation pillars with the same color i.e white in the viral image. 

The name of the Bridge is Jiaozhou Bay Bridge located in China, which connects the eastern port city of the country to an offshore island named Huangdao.

Taking a cue from this we then searched for the Bridge to find any other relatable images or videos. We found a YouTube Video uploaded by a channel named xuxiaopang, which has some similar structures like pillars and road design.

In reverse image search, we found another news article that tells about the same bridge in China, which is more likely similar looking.

Upon lack of evidence and credible sources for opening a similar bridge in Mumbai, and after a thorough investigation we concluded that the claim made in the viral image is misleading and false. It’s a bridge located in China not in Mumbai.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, after fact-checking it was found that the viral image of the bridge allegedly in Mumbai, India was claimed to be false. The bridge in the picture climbed to be  Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge actually happened to be located in Qingdao, China.  Several sources such as reverse image searches, videos, and reliable news outlets prove the same. No evidence exists to suggest that there is such a bridge like that in Mumbai. Therefore, this claim is false because the actual bridge is in China, not in Mumbai.

Introduction

The ramifications of cybercrime can be far-reaching. Depending on the size of the attack, even entire countries can be affected if their critical infrastructure is connected to the internet. The vast majority of security breaches start within the perimeter and most internet attacks are socially engineered. Unwittingly trusting any email or web request from an unknown sender creates a potential danger for those organisations that depend on the Internet for their business functions. In this ever-evolving digital downtown yet another group has emerged from its darkest corners of targeting the UK’s very bastion of British and global heritage; a treasure trove of around 14 million volumes, ancient manuscripts, in the precious British Library. A group self-identified as Rhysida. Their bold maneuver, executed with the stealth of seasoned cyber brigands, has cast a shadow as long and dark as those found in the Gothic novels that rest on the library's shelves. The late October cyber-attack has thrust the British Library into an unnerving state of chaos, a situation more commonly aligned with works of dystopian fiction than the everyday reality of a revered institution.

The Modus Operandi

The gang uses all-new Rhysida ransomware to jeopardize Virtual Private Networks, which is typically used by library staff to gain access to their employee’s systems remotely. The Ransomware presents itself as a regular decoy file in a familiar fashion as regular phishing attacks in an email, tricking its victim and downloading itself into the host system.  Once the malware enters the system it stays dormant and lurks around the system for a period of time. The new malware has significantly reduced the dwell time from 4 days to less than 24 hours which enables it to evade periodic system checks to avoid detection.

 Implications of Cyber Attack

Implications of the cyber-attack have been sobering and multifaceted. The library's systems, which serve as the lifeline for countless scholars, students, and the reading public, were left in disarray, unsettlingly reminiscent of a grand mansion invaded by incorporeal thieves. The violation has reverberated through the digital corridors of this once-impenetrable fortress, and the virtual aftershocks are ongoing. Patrons, who traverse a diverse spectrum of society, but share a common reverence for knowledge, received unsettling news: the possibility that their private data has been compromised—a sanctity breached, revealing yet again how even the most hallowed of spaces are not impervious to modern threats.

It is with no small sense of irony that we consider the nature of the stolen goods—names, email addresses, and the like. It is not the physical tomes of inestimable value that have been ransacked, but rather the digital footprints of those who sought the wisdom within the library's walls. This virtual Pandora's Box, now unleashed onto the dark web, has been tagged with a monetary value. Rhysida has set the ominous asking price of a staggering $740,000 worth of cryptocurrency for the compromised data, flaunting their theft with a hubris that chills the spine.

Yet, in this convoluted narrative unfolds a subplot that offers some measure of consolation. Payment information purports the library has not been included in this digital heist, offering a glint of reassurance amidst the prevailing uncertainty. This digital storm has had seismic repercussions: the library's website and interconnected systems have been besieged and access to the vast resources significantly hampered. The distressing notice of a 'major technology outage' transformed the digital facade from a portal for endless learning to a bulletin of sorrow, projecting the sombre message across virtual space.

The Impact

The impact of this violation will resonate far beyond the mere disruption of services; it signals the dawn of an era where venerable institutions of culture and learning must navigate the depths of cybersecurity. As the library grapples with the breach, a new front has opened in the age-old battle for the preservation of knowledge. The continuity of such an institution in a digitised world will be tested, and the outcome will define the future of digital heritage management. As the institution rallies, led by Roly Keating, its Chief Executive, one observes not a defeatist retreat, but a stoic, strategic regrouping. Best Practices for Cyber Resilience 

It is crucial to keep abreast with recent developments in cyberspace and emerging trends. Libraries in the digital age must ensure the protection of their patron’s data by applying comprehensive security protocols to safeguard the integrity, availability and confidentiality of sensitive information of their patrons. A few measures that can be applied by libraries include. 

• Secured Wi-Fi networks: Libraries offering public Wi-Fi facilities must secure them with strong encryption protocols such as WPA 3. Libraries should establish separate networks for internal operations allowing separation of staff and public networks to protect sensitive information. 
• Staff Training Programs: To avoid human error it is imperative that comprehensive training programs are conducted on a regular basis to generate greater awareness of cyber threats among staff and educate them about best practices of cyber hygiene and data security. 
• Data Backups and Recovery Protocols: Patrons' sensitive data should be updated and backed up regularly. Proper verification of the user’s data integrity is crucial and should be stored securely in a dedicated repository to ensure full recovery of the user’s data in the event of a breach. 
• Strong Authentication: Strong authentication to enhance library defenses is crucial to combat cyber threats. Staff and Patrons should be educated on strong password usage and the implementation of Multi-Factor Authentication to add an extra layer of security.
